The 2012 BLACK GIRLS ROCK! QUEENS CAMP FOR LEADERSHIP & EXCELLENCE: This year the two-week intensive leadership program will be held at a beautiful fully-equipped camp facility located in Rhinebeck, NY from July 21, 2012 to August 4, 2012. This overnight camp is designed for exemplary teenage girls of color who will come to BLACK GIRLS ROCK! from across the world. Through a highly selective application process, BLACK GIRLS ROCK! will accept female applicants who exhibit strong leadership qualities, high moral character, and excellent academic standing. National Day of Service – STEM Works presented by Thursday Network, the Young Professionals Auxiliary of the Greater Washington Urban League on Saturday, April 21, 2012, 10 am – 2 pm at Greater Washington Urban League Headquarters, 2901 14th Street, NW, Washington, DC 20009. Each year the National Urban League Young Professionals (NULYP) chapters collectively participate in community service on the same day to show the nation that young professionals DO give back to our communities. This service commitment is known as National Day of Service. This year’s theme for National Day of Service is STEM Works, and Thursday Network’s goal is to encourage bright young students, especially from underrepresented groups, to study in Science, Technology, Engineering, or Mathematics (STEM) fields. STEM Works will generate an interest in STEM disciplines among our youth through informative and entertaining demonstrations.

ANNpower Fellowship Program: From now until March 31, they are searching the country to shine a spotlight on YOU – young women who are committed to reshaping the world for positive and sustainable change – the leaders of tomorrow. They will select 50 rising high school juniors and seniors to be our ANNpower Fellows for 2012. If you are selected, you will join an elite group of rising stars, providing you with the skills, tools and training needed to realize your full leadership potential. As an ANNpower Fellow, you will participate in the ANNpower Vital Voices Leadership Forum, a three-day leadership training in Washington, DC from June 4-6, 2012. College Bound Anthology: Do you want to be featured in the College Bound Anthology? College Bound wants to showcase our students at the 2012 End of the Year Celebration. Enter to be a part of this year’s anthology and share your ideas and talents by submitting POETRY, ART, and WRITING in the categories of what inspires me, importance of higher learning, my community, my country, what/who is important to me, what I love to do, senior wisdom, what College Bound means to me, and I’d like to change… Plus, there will be a competition to have your artwork used on the cover. Send your work to intern@collegebound.org by March 30th. Give all artwork to your site coordinator or Toronto Alsbrooks. Include your name and contact information on all your materials. You may submit more than one piece.

Spring College Tour: College Bound‘s annual Spring College Tour is to take place from Monday, April 2nd to Thursday, April 5th. We will visit eight schools: University of Delaware, Delaware State University, University of Pennsylvania, Temple University, Haverford College, Bryn Mawr College, Lincoln University and Rutgers University. The tour will include tickets to a 76ers game, the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, a student panel and a trip to premium outlets in New Jersey. Cost of the tour is $100 for College Bound students. Permission slip and fees are due no later than March 27th. Please see Toronto for a permission slip or if you have any questions or concerns.

Emma Bowen Foundation offering Paid Internships for HS Seniors!
The foundation is recruiting again for the best and brightest minority HS seniors students who might be interested in a PAID internship to work at Television stations and media companies in the following cities: Atlanta, GA, Bristol, Connecticut, Greensboro, North Carolina, New York/New Jersey, Washington, DC, Silver Spring, Maryland, Philadelphia, PA, Horsham, PA, and Miami, Fl. Applicants must have at least a 3.0 GPA and an interest in media, business, computer science, engineering or technology. In addition to being PAID, students also receive a matching funds scholarship. Career Exploration Workshop with DELOITTE January 24th 2012
This unique opportunity to engage attendees in actively thinking about, and acting on, their hopes for the future is made possible by Deloitte. The session will review career options across different industries and allow attendees to plan for their futures. The Society of Women Engineers at the University of Virginia invites you to apply for a place in our High School Visitation Program taking place on February 25th 2012. The program is designed to give young women a comprehensive look at engineering fields in general (and specifically UVA’s engineering curriculum) through informative speakers and hands-on design activities. You do not have to have experience in engineering related fields; the program is designed to benefit participants with all levels of engineering familiarity. Those who don’t know much about engineering but might like to consider it as career path are especially encouraged to apply for the opportunity to learn more about what an engineering career is like. C-Span StudentCam Competition: C-SPAN’s StudentCam is an annual national video documentary competition that encourages students to think seriously about issues that affect our communities and our nation. Students are asked to create a short (5-8 minute) video documentary that responds to one of two topics: One of our country’s greatest strengths or a challenge the country is facing. College Bound Community Service Day: MLK DAY is a DAY ON, not a Day OFF for the College Bound family. Parents, students and Partners are invited to take part a wonderful community service opportunity. We will be working with City Year at Dunbar Senior High School. The project will revolve around community revitalization including gardening and mural painting. Most projects will involve painting, so please wear clothes that you don’t mind getting messy! This is not only a great opportunity to help others; it is also an excellent OFF –SITE MENTORING ACTIVITY for students and partners. When: 8:30am – 1:00pm Monday, January 16, 2012. College Bound’s Annual Taste of College Night: College Bound will hold its annual College Fair on Monday, December 5, 2011 from 6 PM to 9PM in Howard University’s Blackburn Center. Students this will be your site for the week and we will see you all there, please encourage classmates and friends to attend as well. DCPS High School Fair: Learn about DCPS high school opportunities. Discover the new high school common application. Access your Individual Graduation Plan (IGP). Find out how to plan for college. College Tour: College Bound’s Fall College Tour is scheduled for November 11th 2011. This year, we will be visiting two wonderful institutions of higher learning: Virginia Commonwealth University and Virginia Union University. All students are welcomed. We will have a student panel from the Office of Multicultural Affairs at VCU which will include College Bound alumni and VUU will be doing onsite admissions for seniors who have filled out an application and have the necessary documents. Writing Workshop: The Essay Writing Workshop will be facilitated by The College of William & Mary Alumni group. During this workshop, students will learn writing strategies as well as tips to write a successful college application or scholarship essay. Seniors and Juniors are especially encouraged to bring their draft essays and get feedback from knowledgeable professionals. The workshop will be held on Saturday, November 5, 2011 in the College Bound office from 10:00 AM to 12:30 PM.
